Business Summit Africa Provides Tech-solutions in Uganda’s Aquaculture Sector
Aquaculture is one of the world’s fastest growing food productions sectors, bringing with it great potential for food supply, nutritional security, poverty alleviation and enhanced trade & economic benefits. Fish production through aquaculture presents an opportunity to circumvent the global challenge of declining stocks from the natural water bodies due to overfishing.
Uganda has been undertaking aquaculture since 1940’s with the aim of ensuring access to fish by rural households. However, the farmers in the sector are challenged with several bottlenecks due to the small-scale nature of investments practiced on scattered and unproductive systems that do not attract good investment and unput supply services. Other major challenges to the sector include; the outdated and highly lacking policy and regulatory framework, lack of affordable quality feeds, unreliable supply of quality fish seed and lack of organized farmer groups to bargain for better markets.
